Construction work will take place over a three-year period, leading up to the completion of the new terminal in 2018. Much preparatory work was completed before the current construction site was opened, and further improvements will be made to the current facilities beyond 2018. Major parts of the project are presented below, in chronological order:
While work for YQB 2018 has been under way for several months, spring 2015 will mark the true beginning of preparatory work for terminal expansion. This phase consists essentially of moving underground infrastructure (such as waterworks), and demolitions or relocations to make way for new facilities. The main projects are as follows:
Some services in the domestic terminal, including the duty-free shop, currency counter and convenience store have been move into the new international section. When all work is completed, the current domestic departures sector will be occupied by the future food court. Work to allow this reorganization in the terminal will last until the full opening of all areas.
Beginning on March 30, 2016, part of the terminal access road will be closed to traffic because of construction work under way northeast of the existing building. Traffic will be diverted to the south roadway. Please note that parking will be prohibited at all times in the drop-off zone. To ensure safety and fluid traffic movements, drivers picking up or dropping off passengers must do so quickly.
Drivers picking up passengers from the airport who want to avoid paying for parking have access to the cell phone waiting area: the CellPARQ. The CellPARQ allows them to remain in their vehicle, sheltered from the weather, and to pick up passengers in front of the terminal once they’ve called or texted to say they’ve arrived. Simple, user-friendly and…free! To see the site plan and locate the CellPARQ, click here.
